Engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

To maximise the chances of successfully creating a diverse workforce that is more reflective of the community it serves, it is important to give special consideration to ensuring culturally appropriate and adequate support is provided. This could include language and literacy training, resume assistance, mentoring and career coaching. The following are examples of strategic initiatives designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interns and trainees that could potentially be tapped into or tailored to grow a sustainable local workforce.

CareerTrackers Indigenous Internship Program

This initiative aims to match Indigenous university students with a company that is aligned to their career interests and to provide them with intensive support to help them convert from an intern into a full-time employee on completion of their university degree. Support includes specialised training in interview and leadership skills, confidence-building exercises and mentoring. Employer support is also provided for the duration of the internship.

Woorabinda Multipurpose Health Service Initiative

This program highlights how a collaborative approach with key community stakeholders, is helping to build an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce in a remote area.

Reconcilitation Action Plans (RAP) for your organisation

Reconcilitation Action Plans (RAPs) are a powerful tool for advancing reconciliation in Australia. By developing a RAP, your workplace will join a community of over 1,000 dedicated corporate, government, and civil society organisations that have formally committed to reconciliation through the RAP framework since 2006. RAPs provide a structured, nationally recognised, tried and tested model for workplaces to formalise commitments to reconciliation. They help to foster a community of shared value, goals and a common language when it comes to reconciliation. For more information click on the button below.
